Pandemics vs. Department of Defense

Pandemics,

Last night around 6:45 pm EDT, a pandemic, with a roaring offensive strike, struck the Department of Defense in the capitol of our country. The battle that followed raised questions about the stability of our country’s defense. The Pandemic, also known as the HHS Pandemics, brought down the Department of Defense in a high powered offensive battle by a final score of 23-18. The Pandemics improved their undefeated record to 4-0, clinching a first place standing in the league.

The highlights from the Pandemics offensive showing last night were unlimited. Angela Glenn, playing in her second game, stepped up to the plate in the top of the 7th inning. The outfielders of the opposing team crept in to prepare for her hit. Glenn stepped up and knocked the skin off the ball; hitting it at least 30 yards over the left fielders head. After shouting an expletive the fielder dropped his glove, knocked off his hat and went running after the ball. Glenn could have walked the bases to record the first female home run of the season! Glenn’s homerun began a 7th inning rally that gave us a sufficient cushion to close out the game. Home runs were also hit by Drew Smith, Ray Sass, Ben Sasse, Riley Swinehart, Jeffrey Anderson, Mike Nelson and Patrick Jaxsens. It was not a bad night with our bats.

For the ladies of the team, the game was enhanced by Fabio’s shirtless cameo appearance in the 2nd inning. At one point in the game Ray Sass stepped up to bat and noticed Fabio, accompanied by his Barbie girlfriend, watching the game while doing pushups in right field. Sass, while not an envious man, decided to put an end to this ridiculous demonstration by cranking a pop fly that landed about 3 feet from Fabio’s bobbing head. Fabio enjoyed the rest of the game behind a tree.

It was a great night for softball, and thank you to everyone that came out to support us. Our next game is this coming Monday, June 2nd against my former team, the EPA Gang Green.

I will send out a reminder about the game tomorrow.

GO PANDEMICS!!!

HHS PANDEMICS vs. GSA WHACKERS

The Mighty Pandemics
Last night, the Mighty Pandemics took the field in search of a 3-0 start to the season. Despite the late notice of the game, the Pandemics fielded a strong team featuring rookies Angela Glenn and Jeffrey Anderson. The game was played at Haines Point, where the long grass and uphill slope brought a new challenge to the Pandemics defense.

The first 6 innings went back and forth with neither team getting much going in terms of a rally. At the beginning of the final inning GSA led by a score of 6-4, and Coach Nelson was visibly shaken by the thought of our first potential loss. The Pandemics, led by Jeff Anderson’s lead-off single, cranked out 8 runs in the top of the final inning to take a 12-6 lead, and gave us a good enough cushion to close the game out. In the bottom of the final inning the defense held strong for a final score of 12-9.

If any of you watched ESPN’s Sports Center last night, you may have seen Drew Smith’s layout catch in the top 10 plays of the day. Running at full speed, Smith elevated himself and flew vertically to meet the ball with an outstretched glove. It was a spectacular catch. Angela Hope closed down a GSA rally by snagging a high hit fly ball into shallow center field. Hope confessed after the game she did it with her eyes closed. The women also gave the Pandemics a spark with their bats led by Preeya Noronha, Rebecca Ayer, Holly Kilness, and Ben Sasse who went 5 for 5 on the night.

Pandemics vs. State / ONDCP

Last night the Mighty Pandemics gave a whooping to the Diplomats and Drug Lords of the State Department and ONDCP.

The game was never close, final score: Pandemics: 18, State/ONDCP: 1

Though the Pandemic’s bats were on fire, it was the tremendous Defense led by Jason “trash talking” Bennett that lifted the Pandemics to victory. Before the start of the game, I was conversing with Drew “Muscle Man” Smith about the physique of the opposing squad. They had a guy on their team that looked like Drew on steroids…I mean this guy was huge. Dressed in knee-high football socks, NY Yankees hat, and jersey, we could tell he was a legitimate threat. His first at bat, we sent the outfield deep to prevent the guy from knocking it over the heads of our outfielders. He stepped up and crushed a ball into deep right field, where Bennett was calmly waiting. Bennett turned, and ran to position himself under the screaming ball…and in a Ken Griffy Jr. type effort, elevated his glove to snag the ball that was destined for a home run! It was spectacular! All jaws dropped as Bennett returned the ball to the infield and gave a “what are y’all surprised about? I do this in my sleep” type shrug. The following inning, the same thing happened…Bennett robbed their Barry Bonds of his second potential home run…and in no less of a spectacular way. You would think that this alone would qualify Bennett for the game MVP, it did, but Bennett wasn’t done. Each time this guy got up, which totaled 4 times, he slammed the ball to his developing nemesis, Jason Bennett; and each time Bennett sent him back to the bench stunned. Following his 3 at bat, Bennett snagged the ball and yelled “come on buddy…keep hitting it out here” to which the big guy said “I can’t believe that guy is talking trash to me!” Following his final out, in complete shock, the big guy said “That guy completely owns me!” And he did! Bennett deserves all the pats on the back for his heroic defense last night!

Other highlights included a triple ASPE home run combination by Ben S”ASPE” (Sasse), Ray Sass, and Coach Nelson. It must be the ASPE water.

Joanne Chiedi returned to the lineup in glory and played spectacular defense at 2nd base.

The game was called early in the top of the 6th inning because of the lead that we had built. It was a great game and congrats to out to everyone who played.

We have a quick turn around before our next game. We play DOD this coming MONDAY. We will be playing on the field we used a bunch last season that is on the backside of the Jefferson Monument. You can park at the visitor’s parking lot or the beginning of Haines Pointe and walk over. Bring your gear on Monday to play! We need to keep the momentum going! Please let me know if you plan on PLAYING in the game on Monday.

Remember the blog is up and operational; get on to check it out. We will be posting pictures from the recent game there. You can also find links to the league rankings, scoreboard, and other fun stuff.

Congratulations again to the Pandemics! 2-0 feels good!

Grade A Victory over USDA Prime!

THE PANDMICS ARE BACK!!! After being spanked last season by USDA 20-8 the Pandemics were hungry for revenge! The game went back and forth until the last inning when our small but mighty crew rallied to score 5 big runs, giving us the cushion we needed to close the farmers out. Our defense in the final innings was phenomenal and prevented the farmers from planting anything in our field! Final score: HHS PANDMICS: 18, USDA PRIME: 13. What a great start to the season!

Now for the highlights! Several outstanding plays deserve mentioning. Kent Forde blasted a Grand Slam in the 2nd inning…he hit the ball so far, the outfielders couldn’t find it. In the News this morning, GWB reported that a softball was sitting on his desk when he arrived in the Oval this morning. Ben sASPE (Sasse) played a great offensive and defensive game that included a triple ending with a head-first slide into 3rd. Sasse also snagged numerous balls in the outfield, including one while being tackled by muscle man Drew Smith. ‘Go-Go gadget arm’ Ray Sass played a solid first base, not letting one ball get past him. And how can we forget the ladies…The ladies dominated on the bats, recording a better on base percentage than the guys. Rebecca Ayer, Mary Kosinski, Angela Hope, Emily Buell, and Preeya Noronha all managed to not only get on base multiple times, but each of them also crossed home plate! A big “Thank You” goes out to Drew Smith for his ongoing efforts to snag fly balls in all corners of the universe…last night he tried something new…catching a fly ball with his chest, not just once but 3 times. We ask all of you to keep him in your thoughts as he is suffering from softball sized welts on his chest. He has vowed to use his glove going forward.

It was a great victory for the Pandemics! Let’s keep the bug rolling!
